  • Training for Zoo Keepers on “Biodiversity Conservation” held at Nandankanan from 10th to 15th November, 2014 and 22 Zoo Keepers from 16 Zoos of 4 states participated.
  • Training on "Strengthening tranquilization team in the field establishment of Forest Department" held at Nandankanan from 17th to 18th November, 2014 and 25 trainees of 8 circles particiapted.
  • Mr. C. Mishra, OFS-I and Sri A.K. Parida, Range Officer visited Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad from 26th to 27th July, 2013 on exposure visit.
  • Six staff visited Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Visakhapatnam from 20th to 23rd December, 2013 on exposure visit.
  • Six staff visited Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna from 13th to 17th January, 2014 on exposure visit.
  • Six staff visited Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad from 23rd to 28th January, 2014 on exposure visit.

  • Nandankanan is an excellent example for the integration of both ex-situ and in-situ conservation
  • It has the significant place in conservation breeding of white tigers and gharials.
  • It is recognized as the leading zoo for the conservation of the Indian pangolin, white tigers and many other species
  • Nandankanan initiated the conservation breeding programme for white-back vultures
 

Free Living Animals

Zoological Park along with the State Botanical Garden and Kanjia lake has been notified as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1979 over an area of 3.47 square kilometers. Many free living wildlife including 13 species of mammals,15 species of reptiles, 71 species of birds, 20 species of amphibians, 85 species of butterflies, 55 species of dragon flies & damsel flies and 51 species of spiders have been documented so far in Nandankanan Wildlife sanctuary.  704 species of plants have also been recorded inside the sanctuary area.

Adopt an Animal

      Now you can adopt an animal of your choice from Nandankanan Zoological Park. The “Adopt an Animal” program would support the Zoo's world-class care and services for all inhabitants by providing quality food to meet their nutritional requirements, medical care, equipment, up gradation of the enclosure and enrichments. The adopter (Zoo Parent) would pay the amount fixed for each species he would like to adopt. No adopters would be allowed to take the animal home. All the adopted animals would remain in the care and custody of the Zoo, and no ownership rights would be conferred.

The World Zoo Conservation Strategy emphasizes that the use of a variety of educational techniques, facilities and considerations, together with knowledge, creativity and inventiveness can make zoos highly interesting, attractive and effective places for environmental conservation and holistic life system education.
Nandankanan Zoo School was formally opened on 29 th December, 2003 (on the occasion of 44th Foundation Day of Nandankanan Zoological Park).

The first issue of Newsletter of Nandankanan Zoo School, named “ Panchatantra ” was released on this occasion. Nandankanan Zoo School is a platform where students get opportunities to learn/know about wild animals/biodiversity/wilderness of planet earth (more particularly of this region) through specially designed programmes of Awareness/Education. These programmes (with lots of fun and excitement) are interactive, innovative, enriched learning. The students get an opportunity to learn and disseminate the need for conserving the wilderness/wildlife/biodiversity.
Interested students are welcomed to join Nandankanan Zoo School. If you intend to join you may contact you principal or coordinator (if already nominated). More than 300 students have already joined Nandankanan Zoo School formally but a large number of students also attend the Awareness/Education programmes during various important occasions Wildlife Week celebration, Elephant Day celebration, Wetland Day celebration, Birth Day of New born of the zoo, etc. and become part of the zoo school. To make the learning more exciting at the Zoo many innovative activities are added.
Your participation is absolutely at your convenience. We always follow the principle of “Learning with pleasure”. History

Nandankanan had a very interesting beginning. Some forest officials conceived the idea of including some rare wild animals and rare orchids typical to our State in the Odisha pavilion in World Agricultural Fair 1960 at Delhi. It was contemplated that rare animals from Odisha would certainly make the Odisha pavilion a crowd puller. Since procurement of wild animal and their transport to Delhi would be an expensive affair,

About Nandankanan

Amidst the natural beauty of natural forest adjacent to Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary, Nandankanan lies in the vicinity of Kanjia lake. This site covers a portion of Krishnanagar and Jujhagarh Demarcated Protected Forests (DPF) and close to Baranga Railway station on Howrah-Chennai route. Geographically it is located between 200 23' 08" to 200 24' 10" North latitude and 850 48' 09" to 850 48' 13" East longitude (Survey of India Toposheet No. 73 H/15-NW).

Kanjia Lake

Kanjia Lake

Kanjia lake popularly known as Nandankanan lake is situated between 85° 48’ to 85° 50’ East longitudes and between 20° 23’ to 20° 25’ North latitudes spreads over an area of 105 ha. The water spread area of main lake is 75 ha, where as about 30 ha is now separated by a road, which gets connected during monsoon. It is an important wetland lying to the south of Mahanadi delta head, within the boundary of Nandankanan Zoological Park. The zoological park remains in the south side of the lake where as the Botanical garden is situated in the north side of the lake. At the same time, it has got immense socioeconomic value as the fishermen from the local village derive their livelihood. Kanjia lake has been declared as a “Wetland of National Importance” by MoEF, Govt. of India since 2006.
It is a home for many local migratory birds of our State. More than 37 species of birds have been recorded from the lake ecosystem. Besides, 20 species of reptiles, 10 species of amphibians, 46 species of fishes and 3 species of prawns have been recorded so far. The floral composition of the lake ecosystem is consisting of 10 species of sub-merged macrophytes, 14 species of floating macrophytes and 24 species of emergent macrophytes.

Botanical Garden

 The State Botanical Garden spread over 173 acres, is situated in the sylvan settings of the moist deciduous forest of the sprawling green Nandankanan Sanctuary hammed between two wetlands Kanjia lake & Kiakani lake. It was established in the year 1963, on the edge of bustling capital city of Bhubaneswar at a distance of 18 kilometers, at Latitude of 20 24 15 N and Longitude of 85 49 30 E, 40 meters above MSL. One would be definitely impressed by the nature's symphony and impressed by the exquisite touch of the wilderness here. Here the time ought to pass under the name of calmness. When one look around, he would have the sweet illusion of the rolling landscape being captured in the frame of a scroll. One can enjoy the changing colours of the seasons here . This is one of the pioneering conservation and nature education center of the state. The botanical garden is sure to provide green enthusiasts with memorable experiences.
